Witness is a book written by Karen Hesse. This book is about the reactions of small town people when the Ku Klux Kan movie in to their town. The setting for this book takes place in the 1920’s in Vermont, when the KKK was going around the nation recruiting members. The author (Karen Hesse) tells the story from each of the characters point of view. Karen Hesse uses indirect characterization to tell the story of each character in the book. The reader can hear the thoughts and feelings of how each character felt when the Klan comes to their town. The main characters were Leanora Sutter a 12 year old black girl, Esther Hirsh a 6 year old Jewish girl, Harvey and Viola Pettibone shop owners, Johnny Reeves the minister, Reynard Alexander the newspaper editor and Merlin Van Tornhout. Karen Hesse did a great job allowing the reader to see through the eyes of each character.
